can i take a xanax before a blood test? just wondering because i'm supposed to have blood tests tomorrow to determine if i'm anemic and what my blood sugar, glucose levels are. I get really nervous at the thought of getting my blood taken so i'd like to take a xanax but would that mess up my test?

Cindi W replied: "Xanax is fine to take with these tests. The only test that would cause "problems" would be if you were having a drug test. Then it would show + for Benzodiazapans. It will not have any effect on these tests."

Is a blood sugar level of 71 normal around 6 oclock when lunch was eaten at 12? I have been curious as to what my blood sugar has been lately so I have been using my mother's machine to test it as she is a diabetic. I have just recently been off Xanax and suspect that my sugars are low from this(I have an anxiety disorder so its hard to tell if my sugar is causing it) I had a physical done a few months back and it came out ok however when I came home from work today my blood sugar was 71. Is this normal or a cause for concern? Yesterday morning I took it after fasting and it was 86.

Monica replied: "Low is under 70. 71 is fine ... it seems a little low, but that doesn't mean diabetes. If you had diabetes you would be getting more highs and may or may not get lows. And some people get low anyway ... I get low and I'm not diabetic, and so does my Mom (she's not diabetic either)"

micksmixxx replied: "Neither of the blood sugar reading that you obtained indicate hypoglycaemia [hypoglycemia if you're American], so, in that respect, you seem fine. (Between 72 and 126 mg/dL is considered 'normal' for a diabetic, but it can range even further for a non-diabetic.) If you are really concerned about your blood sugar levels, and the effects they may be having on you, it would pay you to speak with a doctor about this. Best of luck to you."

Sylke replied: "It is hard to say from this measurement what is going on because blood sugar does depend on activity too. 71 is not considered low, but if you want to make sure, test for 3 days on a regular basis, in the morning before you eat (under 90 but over 60) and 2 hours after you started a meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner under 140 is OK then). If you feel kind of jittery during the day and you know your last food has been awhile test again to see if you are over 60. I hope your mom can spare some of her stripes. :-)"

What is considered normal blood sugar. I took a reading yesterday and it was 85 and today one reading was 148 As far as I know I am non-diabetic and have recently been experience post benzo withdrawal symptoms from being off xanax. I have suspected low sugar and have got a physical done which came back normal. I did get suspicious yesterday and I took my reading with a home monitor machine and it read 85(this was after eating). I did not eat for about 12 hours and I took my reading today and it was (128, then 148, then 116, then 94, 94) I took it multiple times as I was nervous. My question is is this range normal or could my stress be causing this or could the machine not have been working right?

David T replied: "around 90 to 100 is considered good. But my blood sugar fluctuates between early morning and afternoon. It has been as high as 130, but I'm not at a serious level yet. Don't drink a lot of sugar. I use sugar in the raw which is really good."

Carie M replied: "If you are fasting, your blood sugar level should be roughly 70-100. If it is 100-110 consistently when you are fasting, it may mean that you are insulin resistant (sometimes a symptom of another disease, and sometimes a pre-diabetic state). Stress could definitely cause a transient high blood sugar. If you ate within a few hours of checking it, that would most likely explain the higher numbers. Read the instruction manual for your machine. If you suspect there are problems with your machine, the manual should help you troubleshoot. If your test strips are expired, your battery is old, or if your monitor isn't properly calibrated to your lot of strips your test results will not be accurate."

Victoria Sparda replied: "85-115 is normal, now, based on your stresses and diet throughout the day, it can go up and down, if it hits over 135 I would say to see a doctor, if it drops below 80, eat something. Mine has been as low as 72 without passing out, not a good feeling. Lower than 72 means I go into a coma."

david thunborg valentine replied: "the best you can have it is between 80 and 120. if you have around 100 then thats the best you can have. if you have around 150 then you probably have diabetes. same with 30 below."

Monica replied: "Okay ... the 128, 148, 116 then 94 ... they were all taken about the same time? If so, then you have a problem. It could be a problem with the meter, the strips or your technique. Stress can cause higher blood sugars in a diabetic ... but I don't know about for a non-diabetic. But it wouldn't vary like that. My daughter is a type 1, and stress makes her sugars go up. But they don't go back down right away even if she calms down. It would help if you would tell us what kind of meter you're using ... ? The test strips are extremely sensitive to moisture ... if you reached in the vial with wet hands, all the strips might be bad. Are you washing your hands well before testing? Residual sugar on your hands can cause the reading to be high. Are you taking it on your fingertips? Taking a reading from your arm or hand won't be accurate at all. After you prick your finger you want to get a tiny amount of blood out and wipe it off with a kleenex before you get the drop of blood for the test. And when you get blood out of your finger ... it shouldn't be a stream, it should be a little drop, and it should be round and formed. If you don't get enough blood out with the poke, don't squeeze the tip of your finger. You want to squeeze the base of your finger and push upwards ... kind of like you're squeezing toothpaste out of a tube. And don't take your sugar when your hands are cold ... that makes it really hard to get a sample. Oh, and the answer to if this is a normal range ... well ... no. Everthing but the 94 is too high for a fasting number. And it's definitely not low, low begins at 70. Though some people start feeling the effects of a low at 80."

Negativ replied: "Normal is about 100. You can be up to 140 and be normal, too. Fasting level should be below 100, for a person without diabetes."

xanax and pregnancy help! no one is reaponding to me!? im 32 weeks pregnant with my third boy...type one diabetic since age 5 (21) years...ive been on 2 mgs of xanax daily for the past mth...ive suffered with anxiety and depression since my teens....i didnt begin to take the xanax until my third trimester in which ive become extremely anxious, nervous, and worried...several severe panic attacks a day...please answer....im very worried...am i harming my child?...my blood sugars have also become more difficult to control ..im assuming stress related...please no criticism...thnx

Just Call Me G replied: "Who prescribed you the xanax? Why are you relying on a bunch of strangers who know nothing about your medical history nor your pregnancy rather than consulting with your physician? Your doctor will be more than happy to answer these questions for you. Xanax should NOT be taken during pregnancy. It can cause birth defects. After re-reading your question, I'm assuming that you are just taking pills that you've already had in the medicine cabinet. STOP NOW and call your doctor immediately."

3rdXCharm replied: "hun, ask a doctor. they gave you the meds, right? i know some depression/ anxiety meds are approved to take during pregnancy, but you need to research these things before you commit. there could be a safer option, but it sounds like it's more important to get your condition under control so you can function day to day."

beentheredonethat replied: "Don't take that stuff. I'ts really bad for you. Could be bad for the baby. Vitamin B1 helps my anxiety."

Southernmummy replied: "If your doctor perscribed Xanax to you, surely it must be fine then!"

vs2008 replied: "I have read that it is okay to take anti-anxiety medication when approved by your OB and physician. They make a decision after weighing the pros and cons of taking the medication or not. There is a growing number of women who take such medications during pregnancy. If your OB is aware of you taking xanax and approve of it, you should relax. This will the situation so much better. I am sure your baby will be fine. Good luck!"

Lynn replied: "I have severe anxiety and have for about 5 years. I was on xanax and Lexapro until I found out i was pregnant 2 weeks ago. BOTH my doctors told me I COULD NOT take the xanax anymore!!..I am able to stay on the lexapro though. This is the only medication I need anyway. I works wonders and actually works much better then xanax and there is no risk of getting physically addicted to it which I was. Please talk to your doctor about this and I promise they will give you more options on how to control your anxiety.Good Luck"

Jacqui Z replied: "Xanax can been given to a pregnant woman, so long as she is monitored by a doctor. It's not one of the mediations that is strictly prohibited.... If you got the pills from your dr, and now you're worried about the side effects then: 1. the xanax isn't really doing it's job ;-) and 2. you should ask him/her to give you something that's less of a potential risk. Good luck!"

Why is it that some people don't admit or take responsibility for destructive drug use? I hate it when people say, "Oh, it's a disease!" when talking of alcoholism. I ADMIT it's a disease. It's a disease you can do something about! If you have pneumonia, you aren't going to go out to a nudist resort in wintertime Iceland. If you are diabetic, you won't sit around, not exercise, never check your blood sugar, stuff your face with Chinese food etc. You won't do these things if you take responsibility, that is. WHen it comes to addiction, it's no different. If you abuse drugs/alcohol, why just sit back and say it's a lost cause because "addiction is a disease." It IS. Only YOU can help yourself out of the depths of the disease, to where you can say you are recovering. I abuse Vicodin and Xanax......I might have a problem. But, I sure as hell will never say it was NOT a choice.... Okay, allo, I'm an idiot I suppose. Maybe you should change your name to Judge Judy.....as you so love to judge. I am speaking of taking pro-active steps to combat a disease. Name-calling doesn't help. I have three degrees, by the way, and am a MENSA member..... racecar, I know that tidbit about the word already....Si me quieres hablar en otro idioma, te invito.......If you bothered to read the whole question with all the additional details, you'd realize that I may have my own problems. My argument is one of authenticity, and admitting the responsibility of full subjectivity. What is foolish is an assumption that just because I have this stance, that I cannot also allow for how difficult it is to defeat addiction. To finish the beginning of a sentence in "Butch Cassidy," The total tonnage of what you don't know would eclipse the number of atoms that constitute Jupiter.

allo replied: "Only idiots take drugs. Even after seeing the destruction caused by Drugs on tv, magazines, and among their friends and neighbours they still take them, The biggest idiots are the ones who after seeing all the warning signs become addicts for the first time. I just dont understand these people............Reply : Big deal your a member of Mensa, whats that got to do with some one putting drugs inside their body. Get real. You'll get no sympathy from me. And by the way you accuse me of name calling but its ok for you to call me Judge Judy. Dont have double standards with me dude. Drugs are a disease only if you take them in the first place so why did you take them ? Theres a saying '' Use your brains and not your Veins '' . Also I thought Mensa was for intellects, what are you doing as a member..? And just to finish I also have Three Degrees. Great group, I like their music also."

sierraskyesmom replied: "I think part of recovery from any kind of addiction is accepting responsibility for your role. You can't change what you don't own. (Thanks for that gem, oh wise and mighty Dr. Phil - lol) People who say its a lost cause because its a disease just have no desire to change. It's called a cop-out. People have to be pro-active in their own recovery."

mamabear replied: "Remember, though, that with addictions the person needs to be ready to get help--someone else cannot make the decision for them. Many need to hit "rock bottom" before they see that they even need help. I have seen people neglect their health--as in getting no exercise, eating only junk, not keeping doctor appointments, not taking the meds they're supposed to, etc. Why, then, would it be any easier for addicts to go get the help? It's hard to admit you have a problem, to yourself--much less to a doctor or "(Whatever) Anonymous" group. Sure it's a choice (or peer pressure) when people start--but later it becomes something one has no control over."

Just Q replied: "I am a recovering alcoholic with 10+yrs or recovery and I just hate to sit in a meeting and listen to someone who is obviously NOT working a program of recovery and who will sit there and blab on about how their disease "makes" them do things. . . BULL CRAP! ! ! ! Since getting into recovery I have always said that Alcoholism is a disease not an excuse which is what alot of people use it for. . .along with drug abuse. To answer your question. . they won't admit or take responsibility for their destructive behavior because they are still living in denial and because their abuse of drugs/alcohol has their heads all messed up and they don't see things in reality, they only see it their way. There is a saying in AA. . . things are not always as I percieve them to be . . . and this is a living fact for those that are still using. If a person like myself gets into recovery and works a program of RIGOROUS HONESTY,they will eventually see the destruction they have caused and it is at this point they are to make amends unless to do so will harm others. There is no time period for this step to be taken and in some cases this step isn't taken as it could harm someone by doing it so there is something called a living amends where just their action speak as loud as words and the abuser changes their lives and their behavior thus proving they accept their responsibilities. Be careful with your Vicodin and Xanax. As we learn in AA,there is a fine line between not being addicted and being addicted and one can cross that line without even realizing it and crossing back to the lesser side can become almost next to impossible and this is where the problems grow."

Donkey Hotei replied: "One of the defining characteristics of addictive behavior is the belief by the addict that they are in control of their own behavior. This is one reason that the cycle of addiction is repeated, because addicts are unable to fully admit that they cannot control themselves, and that they need outside intervention. They may say, "I can do something about it, I just don't want to right now." Or "I'ts a disease, it's just not bad enough that I need treatment" Once the addict has the clarity to realize and fully admit that they have 0% control over the addiction, paradoxically the addiction seem to lose a lot of it's power. Sadly this typically happens only when the addict has reached "rock bottom"; when the addict realizes that they have lost everything they where willing to risk to get the High, and that feeling of Control. That's how addiction works, by stimulating the pleasure and reward-seeking areas of the brain, while simultaneously suppressing the areas involved in critical thinking and risk evaluation. Thus the addiction continues, until the critical thinking areas become active and stimulated enough that they can no longer be suppressed by the reward areas. It is not that addicts do not understand the risks; that knowledge simply can not override their desire or need for that feeling of "Control" Incidentally it is not only people who are "idiots" who get addicted. Anyone, absolutely anyone can get addicted! Often all it takes is a SINGLE lapse of judgment, something I think we are all guilty of....all it takes is for those reward seeking areas to take over our critical thinking......"

racecar replied: "MENSA means "foolish" in Spanish. It's foolish of you not to recognize that there are others out there who struggle with a lack of will power. Also that there are medical reasons for that lack of will power. I read recently (on yahoo news) that scientists have localized a factor in DNA (I think the word was genome, but not sure) that seems to be responsible for alcoholism. It seems that the endorphine reaction in such people is much stronger than some others. Have a little empathy for others who are not as strong as you, or built like you. I do agree on one point however....It is up to the individual, but that does not lessen the fact that it is a disease. I, by the way, am not an addict, or alcoholic, though like many who grew up in the 70's have tried every drug under the sun, not so much to get high, but to experiment. I haven't ingested any chemicals for many years, but remember their "pull"."

What is wrong with me? As soon as I get up in the morning around 11:00 i feel like I have low blood sugar and I feel insane until I eat. The problem is I am also nauseous(not pregnant) and can only get down milk or yogurt. I then feel like i dont know what to do with my day and feel fatigued. I even make "to do lists"...they help a little. All i want to do is sleep because I am often bored and sad. Sometimes I take short naps but I wish I could sleep my life away. Money is no problem but it doesn't make mehappy. I have a partner i would love to marry but I Feel bad for him because I am sad a lot and very emotional. Now and then I take a very small amount of xanax which helps, but that is about once a month when I just cant take it anymore.I suffer anxieties which I FEEL are very real. i feel very alone but have lots of friends who love me, but I JUST DONT relate spiritually to people or get deep in conversations. I cry a lot, i laugh too, but the frequency of my crying spells may be abnormal...I feel lost

Zoey P replied: "sounds like depression i would go to a docter and have him prescibe a depression medication"

Ali R replied: "i think you should go see a psychiatrist. or take more anxiety medications. it sounds like your depressed."

nmelgel replied: "u sound clinically depressed.go to see your doctor. also getting up at 11 is way to late to start the day. you need to get up early 8 at the latest, get a job so you're not bored then you won't feel so sleepy and sad, maybe some antidepressants would help but you need to see a doctor. good luck"

paul y replied: "snap answer is you are suffering from depression seek a psychologist who will probably give you meds that help (i am taking an anti-depressant and i feel 100 % better) he will test you to see if the problem is physical or mental or both. get professional help and if you don't like the doctor then get a second opinion as there are quack doctors who should not be giving advice."

Haley replied: "You should see a physician as soon as possible. What you are describing is depression. Depression is an illness that requires treatment. You don't just wake up and are magically better. The newer anti-depressants can be very effective. See your doctor and tell him/her what you have described here."

Gramma replied: "You probably just need a relaxing break from your life. If you hold feelings in, they tend to build up and after a while it starts to make you sick emotionally and physically. This happens to me a lot because I have trouble talking about things and getting deep into conversations too. But you should try real hard to talk about things more, I do and it helps, and I feel better afterwards. And sometimes just take a break from things to relax and not think about everything you have to do, and just spend some quality time with your hubby. And maybe if you try to explain how you feel to him, then you will feel a little better and he can maybe help you figure things out too. Hope this helps."

Daizy23 replied: "See a therapist or psychologist. They can help you get your life back on a happier track. But if you still feel empty, go to a local church and talk to the pastor there."

kevin k replied: "You didn't say what your eating and drinking habits are. What you eat and drink has a profound effect on mood, energy levels, sleep patterns.Fluctuating blood sugar levels create a roller-coaster effect on mood. The Glycemic Index Diet is effective at stabilizing blood sugar levels and by extension, mood,if it is followed conscientiously. If you learn to connect the cause and effect between food and mood, you can make better choices for yourself. And you will not have to resort to a pharmacological crutch which works by deadening your senses."

Raed K replied: "I strongly suggest that you have depression,I believe that finding your true dream will make you feel better and get out of this lazy mood,I used to have extreme depression becasue I'm not a good looking guy,I'v always hated myself but when I found my dream which is being a doctor, that's all I care about,I don't care what people think about me,I want to be the best in my field no matter what, make money, marry a nice wife and help my family best of luck Raed :)"

Dr.s Are stumped. What do my symptoms sound like to you?..? ok here goes.... First of all, i had a lot of tests ran this is what they found... An eroded esophagus, that was bleeding from an ulcer in it... I had anemia, but i took care of it. the doctors said it was fine. O.K. i was on three mgs of xanax a day, but i have been off of them for about 16 months now. ok thats my health history, Since ive been having these symptoms my Drs have given me at least 6 EKGs 2 EEGs one colonoscopy two endoscopy's one CT scan of my head one thyroid check via...whatever that test is with the dye and the big machine, A sonogram of my heart countless blood tests for vitamin deficiencies electrolyte issues mono aids tilt table ect ect ect.... ok the only things that have turned up was the esophagus and anemia issues. that was a while ago 16 months i think. but my symptoms are not any better...well maybe 10 percent or so.... symptoms are.... Dizziness Spacing out Feeling faint or like i am going to pass out blood pressure spikes dreamlike out of body state tiredness sooooo tired. breathlessness and anything that i do to stimulate my brain seems to make it worse like playing video games, or spending the day with a book. the symptoms come and go many times thru the day so i cant keep a job... strange huh? I am not making this up. Its not minieres some might say benzo ( the xanax ) withdrawl, but my last dose of that was 16 months ago i use to smoke, but i dont any more, nor do i drink. last smoke and drink was at least 2 years ago... its not a blood sugar or diabetes thing. my docs checked for that three times. I am 27 years old six foot one 245 pounds. the meds im on are prevacid and metoprolol. never had a surgery so i know this is boring, but my docs think im pulling they're legs, so maybe someone could throw in a few ideas i could ask my doc thanks! Yes the anemia has been treated and is fine. it had gotten really low, almost to lvl 2

TS replied: "I am not a doctor, however the BP spikes have happened to me. Finally there was testing of my renal arteries, and I have blockage from FMD."

Linda M replied: "To me, those sound like symptoms of anemia. Is that being treated?"

HAVING TACHYCARDIA AND PANIC ATTACKS!!!!? First off I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder when I was 22. I am now 30. They put me on paxil and atenolol. Then 3 years later the doctor switched me to lexapro and too me off of the atenolol. I was on lexapro for 4 years and back in January of this year I stopped taking lexapro, which took me about 2 months to get off of it. I had no panic attacks during this time period (4 years). But then june of this year I had an attack. So I started lexapro again. Now it is September and they are more frequent and well worse than they use to be. I have been put on xanax as well with the lexapro. .5 mg xanax and 20 mg lexapro. I have just went to the ER for another attack and finally wanted to find out the root cause. They did an EKG, blood sugar, thyroid, blood tests and everything came back normal. He told me too get a holter moniter from my doctor ASAP. He said that obviously there are only two things it can be. Either I have the tachycardia causing the anxiety or the anxiety causing the tachycardia. My question is would Atenolol help out with this? Is there anything I can do to help with these attacks? I am just so tired of having these and feel out of control. please respond quickly. I smoke but am starting to quit now. I drink no caffeine and eat decent I guess. My blood pressure - 141/90 cholesterol - 179 resting pulse - 84

They do NOT work - I've tried them and their solutions are similar - it DOESN'T WORK. Medications do NOT work - I was under many antidepressants (Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil and Zoloft) and anti-anxiety medications (Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax) but my condition was the same - no improvement at all. The only program that really work is The Panic Attack Solution. It's found by an ex-victim. You can check out his old blog in his official website to read up some useful tips. PANIC ATTACKS ANDANXIOUS ALL THE TIME (I GUESS)? I have had my blood checked, cholesterol, blood pressure, EKG, Holter Monitor tomorrow for 24 hours, blood sugar also recently, I am 30 now. When I was 22 I had the same test done with also a stress test and heart actually looked at ECG. Nothing has been found at all so far. I was on Lexapro for the past 5 years, and got off of it back in Jan. 2009 because I felt better. Well the anxiety has come back inthe past couple months and very severe. Been to the hospital 2 times for it and the doctors twice. I am now back on lexapro 20 mg and xanax .5 mg 3-4 times a day and also a beta-blocker atenolol 25mg. My question is how can I go so long ok but all of a sudden start having them again, does this ever end or will I have it for life. My social life sucks now. I fear going places I know I will have one, and everyday I just feel anxious. Some days are better than others but mainly anxious everyday. Is there anything else I can do????? Please share your experiences or techniques to at least cope if not get rid of them completley. PS I bought a workbook for anxiety and panic disorder which I have been using for the past 2 weeks. Please help I am falling apart as if I am not myself anymore. Thanks all I have at least been trying to find the root problem and learn techniques this time just wish i knew aboutthis when i was 22. For others who have this I wish you the best and i feel your pain.

Amber replied: "Meditation, Yoga,5 htp, fish oil, Kava Kava, I take Trazodone for sleep and its been working amazing (if you cant sleep because of the anxiety I would recommend it) self help books (I recommend "how not to be afraid of your own life, by Susan Piver") The Xanax should be helping, but maybe you need to be put on different meds too, I'd say give the good ole Lex a few more weeks (I know it sounds like a lifetime when you're coping with this) Strengthen your own will and power. You WILL be better and get through this! Its only a phase of your life, a section of your brain, don't let your fearful thoughts dominate your thinking, I know this sounds corny but try to think more positive thoughts... Step by step you will get better."

mimi replied: "hmmm, well sounds like you have already been to a professional about this, and google answers probably isnt gonna be any better than that. i know how you feel, i have an anxiety disorder as well, and panic attacks are horrible, fortunately it hasnt gotten so bad as having to go to the hospital. as for the sudden outbreak of your anxiety , ive nothing more to say than the human mind is a strange and unpredictable thing. hang in there."

MeAgain replied: "I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks also. I have gone for long periods of time symptom free and then it's come back again. I think once you get it under control again, you have to be somewhat vigilant about how you take care of yourself, the exercise and eating, sleeping right. It is like a chronic illness that can be managed but, you have to stay on top of it. A good multivitamin, fish oil, plenty of sunshine (if not get enough vitamin D) Think back to how you were doing before this happened and you might see what changed to trigger it again. You have beat this before and you will beat it again, Keep that thought in the front of your mind, especially now. Day dream about how wonderful it felt when you were doing better and visualize yourself that way again."

Karl S replied: "Hey Brent. The first step in curing your attacks is understanding what's triggering your them. It can be a difficult feat to accomplish to since everyone tends to be completely different in this area. I remember my first panic attack. I had just fallen asleep, and I was dreaming a fairly normal dream. I was plugging something into an outlet in my bedroom at home (this incident occurred over winter break, when I was staying with my parents). In the dream, I suddenly felt paralyzed. My heart started beating faster, and I felt like there was an intense pressure on my lungs so that I couldn't draw air into them. I remember thinking, in the dream, that I had been "electrocuted" and I was very certain that I was dying. I woke up then, and it was about ten to fifteen seconds before I could draw a full breath again. Since that time I used meds, and holistic treatments. I used a program called Mind at ease 2 years ago, that worked great for me. Since then they changed the name to panic away, for marketing reason I guess but it's still the exact same product.http://panicawayreviewed.weebly.com Stop being completely terrified, take this thing head on, because if you don't it will ruin your life."
